I am sorry that Sonic Reducer had to come to an end. I would like to thank everyone who listened to the show. I sincerely appreciated all the calls and complements. It makes it worth while to do the show when people I respect phone-in and tell me they like the show. I am glad I got the opportunity to speak to some bands and ask them some dumb questions. Not to name drop but some favorite interview moments:
-The Stills – my first interview so I was drastically overprepared but cool anyway.
-And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Tried to freak us out by saying “Hail Satan” at the end of the interview. Little did they know those were my first words. True story
- Forgotten Rebels - I asked Mickey DeSadist if they were nazis because a guy was wearing a swastika in an old promo picture. I don’t think he liked me.
- Living Things – Such a cool interview, the guys came in and were just hanging out then they did Bom Bom Bom in studio. It was pretty trippy because I was playing one of the old tracks a lot ( I Owe) and they re-released the album and just came in… they weren’t even playing in town. I still don’t understand but whatever.
- Death From Above 1979 – I seriously talked to Jesse from DFA 1979 for about 30 minutes on the phone, I wouldn’t let him go. I had to trim the actual interview down to 10 minutes but there was a bunch of crap we were talking about, hip hop, MSTRKRFT, Femme Fatalle, pretty much everything I could think of asking. This was microseconds before they got huge and started opening for Queens of the Stone Age and NIN.

There so many others… but those are my favorites. Please support local music, London has tons of great bands and some strong scenes. If you feel like you have the time please volunteer at the station, they can always use the help and it is a lot of fun. Thanks again.

Show Highlights: Two interviews on this show. The Reason phoned-in on their way into the Aggression Festival VI to give a quick whats up. Their phone kept breaking up so I had to cut it short. Shotgun Rules stopped by with video camera in tow for a quick interview. They assured me the could easily beat Sleep Set Sail in a fair fight citing their "girly wrists" as being a severe disadvantage.

Aggression Fest VI

Although you wouldn’t know it from the Embassy’s home page there is a huge show coming up this weekend called Aggression Fest VI. The show features nearly 30 bands playing over 2 days. The tickets are $10 ($15 at the door) each day and are available at Speed City and the Embassy. Do the math, that is a ridiculous 72 cents per band. Listen to CHRW for upcoming interviews on Sonic Reducer (Friday, 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm) Less Talk More Rock (Friday 8:00pm-10:00pm) and The Breakdown (Saturday, 3:30pm-6:00pm). I did most of the leg work and found links to most of the bands playing (most have sound clips), so check them out and support the local scene by going to the show.

First, the Show Recap:
To start off the show I had a request for Death from Above 1979, while I was playing Death from Above 1979, it definitely threw me but I played another track anyway, just for kicks. I spoke a little about the John Peel single collection (see the full post) and played a select few. Mickey DeSadist from the Forgotten Rebels phoned in for an (gushing on my part) interview. I really like interviewing bands I have respected for a long time, it is definitely the best part of the whole DJ gig. Despite some early technical difficulties, due to total incompetence on my part, the interview went well. Old punk guys are always a good interview because you have to be a little unhinged to keep playing that many years and it makes for an interesting interview.

Secondly, you may notice a change in the playlist format. The reason for this: The Sonic Reducer Podcast. That's right, I am going to start posting the show so if you missed it the first time you can listen later. It will be broken down into two parts roughly 3:30-4:45 pm, 4:45-6:00 pm and the playlist will be broken up this way. Hopefully the first one will be up later this week.

John Peel's Single Box

I know I have mentioned it before and if you are reading this after Friday I probably spoke about it on the show, but I wanted to expand on the whole story of John Peel's single box. I don't want to be overly dramatic about this whole thing, after all John Peel was just a guy who played other peoples music on the radio, but in a medium that has become so shitty he truly stood out as something special. When streaming broadcasts became available I listened to Peel's show almost religiously, I had heard of "Peel Sessions" before through Joy Division, New Order and The Fall but I didn't understand that it was an actual extension of a radio show until I heard it. I immediately liked the show when I first heard it, although I have always liked difficult music (I used to stay up until 12:00 am to push play on the tape recorder to tape Brave New Waves on CBC radio making me chronically tired in high school) I knew the his show was something different immediately. It is a rare thing for a show on mainstream radio, even a public station like the BBC, to be so influential but at the same time so difficult to listen to. Some of Peel's choice were bad, but that is the beauty of the show, you decided what you liked, it wasn't necessarily forced on you like most radio is now. The most telling thing is the fact even though some of the stuff he played was border line unlistenable, people tuned in every week and listened. But enough... about the singles set:

John Peel had over 100,000 albums. Just think about that number. In modern terms that is the entire contents of Apple's iTunes in one man's personal collection. That is roughly 4 times the amount of recorded music CHRW has in it's library. I have maybe, 1/40th the amount of music and I've calculated that it would take me over a year to listen to everything I have, listening 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He had to build a sizeable extra room on his house to house everything. Even to me, a self-confirmed collecting junky, this seems extreme. Anyways, I digress, in Peel's collection he had exactly 142 7' inch singles (the full list) in a special box that represented songs that were important to him in some way. Some of these were noticeably cringe-inducing (Sheena Easton) and some super-rare (Russian pressing of Beatle's Let It Be) but that is exactly why I like this story, even though John Peel was the most respected radio DJ in the world, he like everyone else, had a few guilty pleasures that meant something to him, probably not for the actual artistry of the music but the time and place it represented. Ultimately this is why I listen to music, the right song on the right day at the right time will be remembered forever. Overly sentimental? Maybe. Peel's record box was revisionist, he was constantly removing and adding singles, trying to find stuff he lost or remembered and removing stuff that didn't mean that much anymore, up until his death. Which is just a big, in-your-face, obvious metaphor for what everyone does in their own head when thinking about that song that played at their high school dance, introduced you to rock and roll, played while you were enjoying the perfect summer moment... whatever. Peel's box was a literal translation of this process and is the ultimate insight into a man who lived his life through music. Honestly, that is something special.

Without trying to sound conceited, I think it was a pretty good show on Friday. There were a lot of cool things to talk about and tons of calls with people requesting lots of good stuff. There were a couple of things I mentioned that I'll just rehash here in case you missed them on the show:

I got a couple of calls about the Pablo Picasso track by Johnny and the Self Abusers . They only recorded 3 tracks (a 7" plus that track, which was unreleased) before transmutating into the 80's staple band, Simple Minds. The track that I played came from WFMU's Beware of the Blog and can be downloaded here.

I was blown away by the Death From Above 1979 cover of La Peste's 1977 track, Better Off Dead. It is no secret that I am a huge Death From Above fan and it doesn't take much for me to like one of their tracks, cover or not, but what is equally cool about La Peste's original version is it's inclusion in this story floating around the internet of John Peel's singles box. Although he had thousands of records, a small selction of 7" were stored in a special box that were his favorites (or incredibly valuable, check out the going rate for the White Stripes 7"s). It is a little nerdy but people have continued to compile them into a huge torrent/compilation. I only wish there were more DJ's like John Peel, who above else just honestly liked music. There was no marketing involved, no demographics, no worries if people would think it was bad or not, he would just play the songs he thought you should hear. He will never be equaled.

The Living Things were in the CHRW studios on Thursday and I, with help from Adam our production guru (okay, he did it all), recorded an interview and a live acoustic version of their single Bom Bom Bom. I can't say enough good things about the band, they are nice guys and I really like the album. I'll post something later in the week about the Living Things because I would like to expand a little on why I think they are worth listening to and don't think I would do them justice here.

Caught In the Wild : The Wolf Band

Hey, I know I'm not the first person to mention this (I actually stole the idea from Chuck Klosterman) but it is hard not to mention the predominance of "wolf" bands in Canadian music these days. I'll try my best to break it down.

Wolf Parade Most definitely the most heralded of the wolf bands, with the new album garnering a justified 9.2 rating from the illustrious and never smarmy Pitchfork. They are the most "indie" rockish of the Canadian lupine contingent and while I am sure those Modest Mouse comparisons get a little old, they are apt. We Are Wolves We have been playing (and mispronouncing)the new album Non Stop Je Te Plie En Deux (on Fat Possum) pretty regularly on the show not just because it is CAN CON, but because it is damn good. These guys are from the same Montreal scene that spawned Les Georges Leningrad and Demon's Claws and are more art-rocky than "indie". The 3 piece also list "rock" as an official member of their band so that is, you know, pretty rad.

The Wolfnote Least you think the Canadian wolf phenomenon is isolated to la belle province, I present Alberta's the Wolfnote. The Wolfnote is straight-up rock and roll, loud and destructive. Raised By Wolves My personal favorite of all the wolf bands, Vancouver's Raised by Wolves play all incarnations of punk. Although I am clearly a product of the MTV generation, I am not a big fan of the music video. Without sounding too much like some sort of music snob, I usually like to associate the song with the music rather than a audio-visual combo. I've fallen in the trap of liking some questionable music because of really good videos (ahem.. Nine Inch Nails). That said, here is some stuff that I like that also has some amusing video accompaniment.

Worst. Dinner Party. Ever. I don't now how many reviews of Adult's Gimme Trouble album I have read that use some version of the phrase "Survivor of electro-clash". I guess there was an electro-clash battle royale I missed or something. I don't know if this is an actual Cure sample or just a "post-modern incorporation of Cure like elements" (i.e. we ripped them off) but I like it. Download the QT video here (Thrill Jockey)

This is a little annoying to get going (PC and IE only), but VH1 has live performances from the Voodoo festival(?). Forget the NIN (see above) but the DFA 1979 and QOTSA (wow, acronym heavy) sets kill. Even though the crowd is a little sparse for their set, there are a couple of new DFA songs which make it more than worth while. watch it. On a related note this Nardwuar interview with DFA 1979 is pretty good. Lots of good stuff about Jesse's dad playing with David Clayton Thomas and DFA playing on Conan O'Brien (Max joins the band!
link (YouTube)). I used to hate Nardwuar but now I get the joke and actually really enjoy the interviews. Most interviewees really get into the extremely odd factual bombardment which makes for a good interview. Check out the Futureheads interview for an example. All the interviews are archived here.

I am slightly underwhelmed by the Test Icicles album "For Screening Purposes Only", only because of the extremely good first single Boa vs Python (download mp3 here (Spin)). My expectations were set a little high I guess. I liked the song so much I tried to find a video, but all I could come up with is this. Sorry.

The internet has become both my best friend and worst enemy. The sheer volume of music nerd crack available is going to be my downfall. There are so many weird clips, old archival material, strange interviews... just too much. Some strange things have popped up this week.

I was going to post some mp3s of old albums that I had forgot and was now into again. One of these was Big Black's Atomizer. I have been listening to that thing pretty constantly the last two weeks and was about to post something about it being underrated and forgotten... Kerosene could have been Smells Like Teen Spirit.... you know the whole song and dance. Then I go to get coffee at Starbucks and just happen to pick up the new issue of XLR8R and what is in it? An interview with Steve Albini about how important Big Black was.. what is this shit? Does this mean I am somehow cosmically connected to the editors of XLR8R, because that would suck. The interview is short but Albini does some hardcore name dropping in part two.

This is an example of why the internet is so dangerous. Here is a clip I would have never seen in my life but through the magic of one person having a video tape of this clip and providing said clip to the wonderful folks at WFMU, the whole world can now see this video of PIL on American Bandstand. Is it an important part of rock history? No. Will it make me have anymore respect for PIL or John Lydon? No. Is it disastrous and funny as hell? Yes, most definitely. Why why why, would they ask any group featuring Lydon to go on American Bandstand? Were the producers asleep during the whole Sex Pistols thing, did they not think something odd would go down? As silly as prancing around the audience while the track you are supposed to be "singing" is playing in the background is, at least it has a hideous and totally-enthralling spontaneity. People in the audience avoid Johnny like the plague. Why? Because they legitimately don't know what he is going to do next. My Chemical Romance on Letterman .... that shit ain't going to happen. Safe as rain. My favorite part is when Dick Clark can't figure out how to deal with Jah Wobble and just calls him "Wobble". Be warned this clip is a hefty download (97 mb).

There is actually a real company called Public Image Limited I wonder if they need an experienced spokesperson?

Just to bring this whole thing back around kind of full circle (semi circle?), I was looking for some Halloween themed songs for Friday's show and stumbled upon some live mp3s of Albini's post-Big Black project, Shellac doing a whole set of Sex Pistols songs in full costume, obnoxious crowd banter and all. David Yow from the Jesus Lizard assumed the role of Mr. Lydon for the night and did such a convincing job evidently most people thought it was actually Johnny Rotten himself. The show went down at Chicago's Lounge Ax in 98 you can read some first hand accounts here. The crowd reaction is almost as good as the songs themselves, during the song Bodies a guy in the crowd says "dude, go spit on him". Wow an ironic cliche in post-punk, who knew?

What is up with bands sounding like Black Sabbath now? Not that I really care because I really like Black Sabbath, but it is weird how these things come in waves, Death from Above 1979 (kind of), Black Mountain, Oneida..etc... The newest heir apparent to Ozzy's throne are Early Man. They just released their first album (Closing In) on Matador. There was an earlier EP but like always I am slightly behind the times, only listening to old Kyuss albums and whatnot.

The problem with the whole Montreal lovefest going on right now is that a lot of good bands are getting lost in the shuffle. We all know the Arcade Fire are the second coming of Christ (or the Beatles... or whatever) but Montreal produces some really good punk and garage bands that don't get enough recognition. Coming from the same scene as bands such as BBQ, Les Sexareenos and the Scat Rag Boosters (to name a few) is Demon's Claws. They now have a 7" on PTrash records but their full-length came out back in January on Dead Canary records (once again slow on the uptake...damn you Kyuss).

I thought Jello hated hippies? Why is there a stoner rock band on Alternative Tenticles? Turn Me On Deadman's new album, God Bless the Electric Freak, sounds like 70's influenced guitar rock, think Urge Overkill, Fu Manchu and .... wait for it.. Kyuss (bam.. the tri-fecta). The offical blurb reads: Turn Me On Dead Man may be the antithesis of what Alternative Tentacles usually stands for, but who doesn't have a moment of weakness for 70s rock? Oh Jello, you cross-over money-grubbing whore. Seriously though, check it out.

Former Can vocalist Damo Suzuki is at the Forest City Gallery on Thursday. I am a little embarrassed at my late indoctrination to krautrock and Can. Most rock nerds (I grudgingly consider myself one at this point) refer to Can in every third conversation (actual stat). Although ultimately krautrock is not my thing (I like much, much crunchier guitars) I understand the ahead-of-the-timeness of the music. This is a chance to see a pioneering legend in action. Damo is playing with The Riderless and the price is a low low $5. The show will most likely be a little crowded so go early.

The Hospitals used to be on In the Red Records (now on Load) and have that whole noise/dirty garage sound. The new album is called: I've Visited the Island of Jocks and Jazz. In case you are unfamiliar, they are most easily compared to the A-Frames, Coachwhips, Lost Sounds. Pitchfork gave the album a 5.2 but they are a bunch of indie nerds so decide for yourself

If you missed the show I will give you a recap:
1) I had a poorly recorded interview with Jesse Keeler from Death From Above 1979 I think the phrase "sounded like it was recorded in a bathroom stall" was said more than once. Haters.
2) We had picked more music than we could ever possibly play in our time slot,
in fact Pat tried to cram a 16 min Mogwai song into the last 4 minutes of the show. Funny.
3) I wanted to start our new classic album feature (Brand new you're retro) but because of our usual stellar time management we couldn't get to it. Next week for sure.
4) The pick for Sonic Reducer vs. the Library was actually pretty good, thus negating the humour of the game. A weird fact: there is a cover of a Juiles Shear (Last weeks random pick) song on the album. Freaky. Buy it on Gemm

If you live in London (and actually read this) Hot Hot Heat have announced their tour dates for Southwestern Ontario and are at The Drink on the 20th of April (Tickets are on sale Friday March 4) . The show will also feature The Futureheads and new "it" band Louis XIV. That is a power-packed bill for little London Ontario.

This game is a good source of procrastination. I am still waiting for the Bright Eyes version (Conner Oberst would be much more fun to kick)
